To be honest I dont really understand why there is such a widespread concern for preserving national identity. I dont see why globalisation should be perceived as a threat to regional culture, its shape or spirit. Identity as such is not a static, fixed construct. It shifts and evolves with time, always pliable and receptive to outside influence. I find it really amusing that Poland seems to be so thoroughly infected with the virus of reactionism. We, who pride ourselves in our historical tolerance, our unique cultural life, we who are taught that our country was a crossroads of various influences, a breeding ground for new ideas, the melting pot of Europe...
One cant separate cultural identity from its ingredients. If globalisation is the current dominant issue, then there is no way we can fight it - nor should we. It does not endanger any culture, it enriches it, infuses it with new life. Brings it up to date, if you will. Protesting against that seems to about as reasonable as lamenting the historical spread of Renaissance architecture. If the result of globalisation is heightened cultural uniformity among nations - so be it. I dont see anyone grieving over the lost identities of the various pagan tribes, which formed the Polish nation. Were now facing a similar process, except on a larger scale. And the result? Hopefully a greater understanding among the inhabitants of this world. That is a worthy goal in itself. Anyone who cant see that should be preserved himself. Preferably in some remote location.
